KOLKATA/NEW DELHI: Cyclone Yaas, which is bearing down on Bengal and Odisha from the Bay of Bengal, is likely to spare the south Bengal coast and lash the Balasore coast in Odisha — 240 km from Kolkata — on May 26 noon with a thunderous wind speed of 155-165 km per hour, the Met department said on Monday.
Home minister Amit Shah reviewed the preparedness for the cyclone with the chief ministers of Odisha, West Bengal and Andhra Pradesh and LG of Andaman and Nicobar Islands and asked them to ensure power back-up in all Covid-19 care centres, laboratories and vaccine cold chains, besides seeking safety of around a dozen oxygen generation plants dotting the eastern coast.

Shah also advised the states to ensure adequate stocks of all essential medicines and supplies in hospitals, keeping in view likely disruption of movement of vehicles.
The Centre has deployed 109 teams of the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) across five states/UTs for evacuation and relief/rescue operations. On Monday, Yaas was merely 610 km south-southeast of Digha. It is likely to transform into a ‘very severe’ cyclonic storm on Tuesday and reach northwest Bay of Bengal early on May 26.
