Three killed as incessant rain drowns Malda
Malda: A sudden and unexpected downpour left Malda flooded a day after Cyclone Yaas hit the Odisha coast on Wednesday. The incessant rain left three, including two minors, killed even as life was majorly disrupted across the district.
Sources said Malda received 309mm rainfall in 24 hours between Wednesday and Thursday night. The loss in agriculture was yet to be estimated.
With large parts still under water, a huge loss of property and livestock was also being feared. Like some other parts of the state, including Kolkata, the heavy shower in Malda was triggered by a squall line that stretched between Jharkhand and south Bengal.
At Laliabari village under Chanchal Police Station, Tanu Soren (50) along with her grandsons Rohit Tudu (7) and Rahul Tudu (5) were asleep when a part of the roof collapsed on them. Taken to a rural hospital, they were declared dead.
Most wards in English Bazaar Municipality area, including Malda Medical College, were inundated. Patients as well as their relatives spent an anxious night as water flowed inside the wards. At Subhashpally, Malanchapally, Vivekananda Pally, Govt Colony and Maheshmati, water gushed into homes on Thursday night.
Markets like Netaji Market and DCR Market were the worst hit. Jayanta Kundu, secretary of Malda Merchant Chamber of Commerce, claimed that wholesale traders have sustained losses worth more than Rs 200 crore.
Inhabitants of Ghorapir and Malanchapally blocked the state highway on Friday morning protesting the poor drainage system. District magistrate Rajarshi Mitra visited the affected areas.
MP Mousam Noor, who visited the marooned areas, said: “We are informing the state government about the calamity.”
