PRAYAGRAJ: A joint team of
police and
Fatehpur district administration officials on Sunday evening performed the last rites of six unidentified bodies found on the banks of the
Ganga on Unnao-Fatehpur border in
Uttar Pradesh earlier in the day.
A five-member team of officials also carried out a five-hour search between Adampur and Bhitaura ghats on Monday but did not find more bodies.
Inspector general of police (Prayagraj range) KP Singh told TOI, “Acting on a tip-off that at least six bodies were found lying on the banks of the Ganga, a team of Fatehpur police reached the spot on Sunday morning and sent the bodies for post-mortem examination.” He claimed that the “recovery of bodies had nothing to do with Covid-19”.
He said the bodies were highly decomposed and might have come floating from far-off places.
Police said the last rites of the deceased were performed at Bhitaura ghat as per protocol. The bodies could not be identified.
Officials said the water level of Ganga had increased on Monday as compared to Sunday and added that they were maintaining a close watch on rivers and ghats.
