2 labourers from Malda killed in Varanasi bldg collapse
Varanasi/Malda: Two labourers from Malda died while six suffered injuries when a portion of an old, dilapidated and partially demolished building collapsed on them in the Kashi Vishwanath Dham (corridor) area early Tuesday. All of them hailed from Kaliachak.
Chief minister Mamata Banerjee condoled the deaths and said the state government would stand by the families.
Minister of state Sabina Yeasmin said: “It is the most unfortunate incident. On Wednesday, minister Firhad Hakim will meet the families with the message of the CM.”
Giving details of the tragedy, Varanasi divisional commissioner Deepak Agrawal said, “After ending their work in the night shift, eight labourers had gathered under a partially demolished building, a portion of which was left untouched to lend support to an old structure behind it. Around 3.30am, this structure collapsed and the labourers were buried under it.”
Aminul Momin (40) of Shersahi and Ebadul Momin (30) of Ranuchak died on the spot. Arif Momin, Emran Momin, Sayed Akhtar, Arif Momin, Hakim Khan and Abdul Jabbar were injured. All of them, below twenty, were admitted at Kavirchura Hospital. They are stable.
Malda police superintendent Alok Rajoria said, “We are in touch with Uttar Pradesh Police and the bodies are being sent by them.”
PSP, the construction company executing the project, and Kashi Vishwanath Temple management have jointly extended financial help of Rs 5 lakh to the kin of each deceased. Each injured labourer will be given monetary assistance of Rs 50,000.
