Things to do in the San Gabriel Valley/Whittier, June 3-10.

Free for seniors: Pasadena Senior Center offers free events in June via Zoom, including a class on financial fitness, 10 a.m. Thursday, June 3; and a discussion on common foot problems at 10 a.m. Thursday, June 10. Registration in advance is required, but membership and Pasadena residency is not. All participants will receive an email link for each activity. World adventures online at the library: It would be virtually impossible not to have fun at two events offered by the Los Angeles County Public Library system. First, join Alfredo Ortiz as he weaves music through his experience of migrations, hardships and successes. The composer and author will perform on the Paraguayan harp and reflect on the cultural and musical heritage of South America. Catch “World Adventures with my Harp,” at 4 p.m. Thursday, June 3. Also, chef and culinary historian Hae Jung Cho presents a kimchi workshop, 11 a.m. Saturday, June 5. Learn how to prepare water and cucumber kimchi in this event for adults. Family movies: Join the fun at the Azusa Drive-In movie series, presented by the city’s Community Resources Department. Movies are shown at 8 p.m. Fridays at Northside Park, 601 W. 11th St. in Azusa. Space is limited. Cost is $10 per vehicle. Paletas for all: Latin Grammy Award-winning musician Lucky Diaz and artist Micah Player weave a summer treat around the picture book “Paletero Man,” at 11 a.m. Saturday, June 5, via Crowdcast on Vroman’s Live. Master series – Ancient Egypt: Seniors 50 and older are invited to join Timothy Doran, associate professor of ancient history at Cal State Los Angeles, as he examines Egyptian history from prehistoric times through the death of Cleopatra in 30 B.C. This Masters Series, offered by the Pasadena Senior Center, will be online via Zoom from 2 to 4 p.m. Tuesdays, June 8-29. Admission for the seven-week term is $60 for nonmembers. Author authors: Whittier Public Library Foundation continues its “Virtual Author Series” Wednesdays in June. For $25, get access to one of five Zoom talks with award-winning authors, or get access to all five talks for $100. Proceeds will benefit the Central Library renovations (whittierplf.org). Learn the story behind the stories from Tom Zoellner on June 9; Gustavo Arellano on June 16; Molly Knight on June 23; and Lisa See on June 30. Family movie night: Get your tickets to the parking lot edition of Family Movie Night. Bring your dinner (preferably from a local restaurant) and chairs to catch “Sonic the Hedgehog” (2020) at dusk, Saturday, June 26, at the parking lot of the old Alpha Beta on Hadley Street and Comstock Avenue. Babies at the Arboretum: Baby horned owls and ducklings, and who knows what other baby animals you can spy at the Los Angeles County Arboretum, 301 N. Baldwin Ave., Arcadia. Spring is full swing at the gardens. The Arboretum is open from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. daily, with last entry at 6:30 p.m. All guests must wear face masks or coverings and practice social distancing. Butterfly season: Just in time for its 25th annual butterfly season, Kidspace Museum is open, with new guidelines, such as ticketed time entry and reduced capacity. Find butterfly surprises outdoors and check out the 2,500-square-foot chalk mural as Aleina, from Lucky Paws Art Co., adds to it. Hours: 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesday through Sunday. Whittier history: The Whittier Museum, owned and operated by the Whittier Historical Society, is open. Visitors must wear masks and maintain social distancing. At the Norton: See Paul Gauguin’s 1888 painting “The Swineherd,” on loan from Los Angeles County Museum of Art through November, at the Norton Simon Museum, which has reopened with new visitor protocols and guidelines. Farmers market: Uptown Whittier Farmers Market offers fresh fruit and veggies, mixed nuts and dried fruit, micro-greens, organic herbs, hummus and cheese, eggs, seafood, and pre-packed tea. At the Homestead: Visit the Homestead Museum, in real life, as they say. Family fun: The Monrovia Street Fair and Market are up and running, from 5 too 9 p.m. Fridays in the 500 block of Myrtle Avenue between Lemon Avenue and Colorado Boulevard. Get some of the best hummus and pita bread, fresh veggies and fruits, crafts and artisan items. The kids’ play area, entertainment and some food services are discontinued, but the fair still makes Friday nights lively in Old Town.
