COIMBATORE: A 25-year-old woman police constable committed suicide by hanging at the police quarters here on Wednesday.
The deceased, R Mahalakshmi of Kaliamman Kovil Street at Kenjampatti in Madurai district, had been working for the rural armed reserve police from 2018 and was staying in the quarters at Uppilipalayam.
“She was in love with a colleague, who belonged to a different caste.
The man’s family was against inter-caste marriage. Mahalakshmi phoned the man on Wednesday afternoon from her quarters and a verbal altercation broke out between them. Later, when she failed to respond to his calls, the man reached her quarters and found her hanging from the bedroom window using a nylon rope. He cut the rope and laid the body on the floor,” a police officer said.
The Race Course police sent the body to the Coimbatore Medical College and Hospital (CMCH) for postmortem and registered a case under section 174 CrPC. The body was later handed over to Mahalakshmi’s family.
