650 villages in Hassan free of Covid, but poor facilities hobbles efforts
There has been little letdown in vigilance among officials, elected representatives and residents of the villages in Hassan district, leading to a fourth of the 2,600 villages – 650, to be precise – now being rid of Covid-19. Officials and elected representatives in the gram panchayats (GPs) have left no stone unturned in their efforts to prevent the infection from spreading, from subjecting those who have travelled from other states and districts to a Covid-19 test and enforcing, without any lenience, all the safety measures. The villages in Alur and Sakleshpur taluks, however, have been less successful in the fight against the pandemic, largely owing to the insufficiently staffed health department, and inadequate number of ambulances.
