Kolkata: Community kitchens & shelters in Yaas-hit zones

KOLKATA: Some city-based NGOs and social welfare organisations have come forward to set up community kitchens and shelters and provide relief materials to Yaas-affected people in the villages of Kultoli, Khejuri and other places.
The West Bengal Radio Club (Amateur Club), a group of HAM radio operators, who assisted the South 24 Parganas district administration at four places in relief and rescue work for cyclone Yaas, on Friday sent relief materials to the Yaas-affected villagers in Mousuni and Sagar islands.“We have distributed relief materials to over 500 villagers,” said West Bengal Radio club secretary Ambarish Nag Biswas.
Members of the New Town Forum and News (NTFN) visited Yaas-affected villages of Aurakbadi, Binbasuria, Thanaberia and Dhobaghata at Khejuri in East Midnapore for a few days along with a team from the local Antyodaya ashram.
“We have distributed essentials to over 300 people,” said Samaresh Das, NTFN chairperson.
The South Asian Forum for Environment (SAFE) has set up a community kitchen in association with the state forest department’s South 24 Parganas division. “We are working in Kultoli’s Deulbari Debipur area where several villages have been badly affected. We are trying to cover about 48 households having over 250 affected villagers with daily food and drinking water,” said Dipayan De, chair, SAFE.
