MANDYA: Police and revenue officials detained four newly-wed couples as they had allegedly violated Covid protocols in KR Pete taluk on Sunday.
According to KR Pete tahsildar Shivamurthy, the wedding were conducted against Covid norms in Kyatanahalli, Harirayanahalli, Nandipura and Murukanahalli. Hundreds of people gathered at the marriage functions and safety norms were thrown to the wind, he said.
Officials conducted raids on the four locations and arrested the newly-wed four couples along with their parents and priests who officiated the ceremonies.
"All the arrested persons were released bail and the priests were strictly warned not to conduct marriage rituals if the weddings were found flouting Covid safety norms," said Shivamurthy.
He said that none of parents had obtained permission to conduct the weddings. Also, at the venues of the weddings, none of the safety measures including maintaining social distance, wearing masks and providing hand sanitizers were being followed.
"Conducting weddings without permission and not following Covid norms should invite harsher legal consequences and law should take its own course against violators howsoever influential they may be" Shivamurthy warned.
Circle police inspector MK Deepak and other police officers had accompanied revenue officers during the raids. The incident has brought home the need to observe safety norms.
