Things to do in the San Gabriel Valley, Whittier June 10-17:

Alan Heller is happiest when wandering through the desert sorting through trash heaps. See the results at a new exhibit at the Duarte Historical Museum starting June 12.  Heller will exhibit his collection of acetylene gas lamps, known as carbide lights, which spelunkers used to light their way when exploring caves and working in mines. He will also share his bottle collection.

Learn why some bottles turn purple after sitting in the sun. Discover how spelunkers find their way in pitch black caves and mines.

The museum is at 777 Encanto Parkway in Duarte and is open from 1-4 p.m. Saturdays, and from 1-3 p.m. the first and third Wednesday of the month. Admission is free. Masks must be worn in the museum. For more information, call 626-357-9419. www.ranchodeduarte.org

Free for seniors: Pasadena Senior Center offers free events in June via Zoom, including a discussion on common foot problems at 10 a.m. June 10; Alzheimer’s Savvy Caregivers support group at 11 a.m. June 11; chair yoga at 10 a.m. June 14; “Ask the Athletes” panel on tennis at 4 p.m. June 14, featuring Rosie Casals and Dick Gould; and advanced planning on health care, finances and more at 10 a.m. June 17.

Family movies: Join the fun at the Azusa Drive-In movie series, presented by the city’s Community Resources Department. Movies are shown at 8 p.m. Fridays at Northside Park, 601 W. 11th St. in Azusa. To a prettier Whittier: The Whittier Police Department and Whittier Police Officers’ Association invites the community to a Greenway Trail Community Cleanup. 9 a.m.-noon June 12. Volunteers will start at the east and west ends of the Greenway Trail and meet in the middle for a police vehicle expo, snacks and fun. All supplies will be provided. Children must be accompanied by an adult. Registration is not required, but only registered volunteers will be shuttled back to their vehicles at the end of the event. Health after cancer: Cancer Support Community-Pasadena offers an online program on healthcare after cancer from 6-7 p.m. June 15. Admission is free.

Karla Wilson, a nurse practitioner specializing in childhood, adolescent and young adult survivorship at City of Hope, will offer strategies to enhance health and well-being after cancer. She will also discuss the importance of health screenings for general health maintenance and the value of a healing diet and exercise to improve energy and decrease fatigue.

Author authors: Whittier Public Library Foundation continues its “Virtual Author Series” Wednesdays in June. For $25, get access to one of the Zoom talks with award-winning authors, or get access to all five talks for $100. Proceeds will benefit the Central Library renovations (whittierplf.org). Learn the story behind the stories from Gustavo Arellano on June 16; Molly Knight on June 23; and Lisa See on June 30. Each talk will feature a question-and-answer session, too. At the Homestead: The Homestead Museum, with its landmark homes, cemetery, and gardens, is open for outdoor, self-guided tours from noon-4 p.m. Friday-Sunday. Admission is free and masks are required for visitors ages 2 and older. Indoor tours of historic homes will start on June 18. Tour capacity will be limited and available on a first-come, first-served basis. Workman House tours will be offered at noon and 2 p.m. and tours of La Casa Nueva are set at 1 and 3 p.m.

Also upcoming online is a virtual program, “Behind the Scenes at La Casa Nueva,” from 2-3:30 p.m. June 27. La Casa Nueva is a Spanish Colonial Revival house built by the Temple family from 1922-1927, but lived in for fewer than three years. It later became a residence hall for a military school and convalescent home before being restored.

Paul Spitzzeri, museum director, will lead this in-depth look at the history of a remarkable house. The Homestead specializes in the history of greater Los Angeles between 1830-1930.

Summer at the Arboretum: The Los Angeles County Arboretum, 301 N. Baldwin Ave., Arcadia, is open from 9 a.m.-7 p.m. daily, with last entry at 6:30 p.m. Tickets must be purchased in advance online. Whittier history: The Whittier Museum, owned and operated by the Whittier Historical Society, is open. Visitors must wear masks and maintain social distancing. At the Norton: See Paul Gauguin’s 1888 painting “The Swineherd,” on loan from Los Angeles County Museum of Art through November, at the Norton Simon Museum, which has reopened with new visitor protocols and guidelines. Farmers market: Uptown Whittier Farmers Market offers fresh fruit and veggies, mixed nuts and dried fruit, micro-greens, organic herbs, hummus and cheese, eggs, seafood, and pre-packed tea. Family fun: The Monrovia Street Fair and Market are up and running, from 5-9 p.m. Fridays in the 500 block of Myrtle Avenue between Lemon Avenue and Colorado Boulevard. Get some of the best hummus and pita bread, fresh veggies and fruits, crafts and artisan items. The kids’ play area, entertainment and some food services are discontinued, but the fair still makes Friday nights lively in Old Town.
