Rapper MC Kode traced in Jabalpur, good sense prevailed, says mother

“They put a bounty on his head, ordered lynching, they leaked our address, people reached the place. This means that no one is secure. I wish something is devised for abusive Twitter handles,” Tiwari's mother Deepa said.

A week after 22-year-old Delhi-based rapper MC Kode aka Aditya Tiwari went missing from his home, the Delhi Police found him in Madhya Pradesh’s Jabalpur on Wednesday.

Tiwari, a popular name in the capital’s underground hip-hop circuit and one of the founders of Spit Dope Inc — a collective that organises battles raps — had gone missing after posting an ambiguous Instagram story on June 2.

His mother, Deepa Tiwari, filed a complaint in South Delhi’s Mehrauli police station on June 4 and a case of kidnapping was registered the next day.

A senior police officer said, “His mother told us he left his home in Saidullajab after posting a suicide note on Instagram. We found that his phone’s last location was in Noida on May 25. It was later switched off. We wrote to social media sites to provide Tiwari’s account details. During the investigation, we found Tiwari was in Madhya Pradesh.”

Atul Kumar Thakur, DCP (South) said a team was sent to Jabalpur, and Tiwari was found at a friend’s place there.

“After leaving Delhi, we presume he contacted his friend and went to live at his place. We haven’t questioned him yet and our team is bringing him back to Delhi. We will then ask him about his disappearance and how we went to Jabalpur,” said the DCP.

A week before Tiwari went missing, an old rap battle video resurfaced online and Tiwari was trolled for lyrics disrespectful towards Hindu scriptures. Tiwari’s family claimed he received death threats on social media. The rapper apologised for the old video — he was 17 at the time — but the threats continued, with one person announcing a reward of Rs 50,000 for anyone who would slap Tiwari 20 times and record it.

Following the trolling, Aditya posted a story on Instagram: “The constant suffering and trials and tribulations of life have made me weak. Currently standing at an isolated bridge overlooking the Yamuna… I do not blame anyone for anything but myself. A relief from my own existence is gonna serve as a punishment that the entire country wanted.” His friends began to look for him around the location, but he is yet to be found…”

On Wednesday, his mother Deepa told The Indian Express, “I was informed by the SHO that he has been traced at a friend’s house. I think he must’ve tried to end his life but would have realised that this is not the route I should take, which is the right thing to happen. I also know that he is a sensible, mature person but he was really scared and he must have been in complete darkness. In the last six-seven years, whatever he made of himself in the field of rap, established a company, got brand endorsements, he lost everything. He must be trying to thrash out things in his mind before surfacing back.”

“They put a bounty on his head, ordered lynching, they leaked our address, people reached the place. This means that no one is secure. I wish something is devised for abusive Twitter handles,” she said.

Soumya Joshi, founder, and curator of the Syzygy Art festival and Tiwari’s colleague who was one of the first few people to call the police on June 2, said, “Initially I really thought that we had lost him. But later I started thinking that he had probably left town. I am glad he is alive… If he wanted to disappear, he should have done that without the suicide note…”
