One person has died following an apartment building fire in New Kensington on Wednesday evening.
The fire broke out around 7 p.m. at a building that holds six apartments in the 1300 block of Kenneth Avenue.
New Kensington fire Chief Ed Saliba said the fire was heavy and there was a lot of heat on the first floor when firefighters arrived.
Saliba said as firefighters entered the building, the fire then extended to the second and third floors.
Firefighters found the victim’s body in an apartment located on the first floor. All other residents were able to escape.
Saliba said the flames were intense and they did everything they could to try to save the person found inside.
One firefighter was taken to an area hospital for heat exhaustion, Saliba confirmed.
Seven people who lived in the building are now displaced and the Red Cross is at the scene assisting them.
