AHMEDABAD: Ahmedabad is set to chart its path to a bid for the
2036 Olympic Games. This dream is now beckoning as on Tuesday, Ahmedabad’s apex planning body the Ahmedabad Urban Development Authority, invited proposals from consultants to assess venues and infrastructure required to host the
Olympic Games.
Ahmedabad is being clubbed with Gandhinagar in this Olympic quest, according to the proposal.
The roadmap will be chalked out by AUDA and the Sports Authority of India. The idea is to ensure facilities for more than 40 sports within the city, including the Rs 458 crore Naranpura sports complex. The proposal also details how other Gujarat cities can be prepared to host Olympic events. The proposal states “…the consulting agency will assess sports and non-sports venues and city infrastructure for hosting the Olympic Games,” and “…Identify multiple options for host cities that could potentially host the Olympic Games.”
“Within the city, the Sabarmati-Motera area, with the bullet train, metro rail, BRT and SVP Sports Enclave is a fit candidate to host the majority of these sports events,” said a senior AUDA official.
AUDA’s plan comes after President Ram Nath Kovind inaugurated the Narendra Modi Stadium, the world’s largest cricket venue, in the city on February 24.
AUDA and AMC officials had unveiled plans of a large sports complex and Union home minister Amit Shah had stated that Ahmedabad has the potential to host the Olympics.
