Mumbai: Five wanted in over 100 chain snatching, theft cases across country arrested

At least five wanted accused involved in cheating people and chain-snatching with several cases in Mumbai, Thane, and various parts of the country were arrested by DCP Zone-7 officers.

The operation to nab the accused was launched after taking an overview of the bataoni and chain snatching cases registered in Ghatkopar and other police stations under Zone-7.

Along with key accused Majlum Fayyaz Hussain alias Jaggu (44) the police have arrested Kasim Haidar Sayyad Irani (28), Talibh Irani (55), Jafarali Irani (39) Saadikali Rehmat Saifullah Jaffri (19) - the residents of Ambivali in Kalyan.

The accused are also wanted in cases registered in Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Kolkata, Bhopal in various cases, said a senior police official.

On May 22, a senior citizen who had gone to buy vegetables was robbed of her 50-gram gold bangles in Vidyavihar opposite Nilkanth Complex.

Later, acting on a complaint and the information obtained, the police traced his vehicle and got the information about the accused. Further, acting on a tip-off, a trap was laid in Titwala on May 31, and the accused named Kasim Haidar was arrested. He has been booked under IPC 420,170, 34.

Cops said that Kasim would disguise himself as a cop in plain clothes and tell the victim that a robbery that taken place in the vicinity before stealing the ornament on the pretext of keeping them safe. Upon arrest, the police have also recovered a bike and a 25-gram gold bangle from him.

During the investigation, the name of two more accused - Majlum and Talibh came to the fore who were involved in the crime.

"Initially, we launched a combing operation in Ambivli on the night of June 6 to nab the accused, however, it was found that they were not home. Later, we got to know that the accused had left from Ambivli on a bike and would be coming to Ghatkopar-link road. Accordingly, we laid a trap and arrested them," said DCP (Zone-7) Prashant Kadam.

Kasim has around 37 cases registered against him, while Majlum has 31. The cops also recovered 78 grams of gold from the accused.

On June 6, the cops also arrested two more accused - Jafarali and Saadikali in connection with the robbery of a 16-gram gold chain from a woman who was crossing the road at Shreyas Signal in Ghatkopar on June 4.

Acting on a tip-off, cops got the information that the accused were to come to Jagruti Nagar Metro station and they were arrested after laying a trap.

Jafarali has 11 cases in Mumbai and Thane jurisdiction and Saadikali has two cases.


Speaking about the arrests, the Joint Commissioner of Police (Law and Order) Vishwas Nangre Patil said, "It’s good to catch these accused and it will solve all the serious crimes across the city."

To arrest the accused, Ghatkopar police station PI Agarkar and his team had conducted the combing operation at least eight times.


Another official said that Kasim and Majlum are most wanted and they have been evading arrest since 2015.
