Canceled last year and delayed this year, organizers of Omaha’s Cinco De Mayo celebration say they are finally ready to welcome people to South Omaha June 11-13.The annual celebration commemorates the Mexican army’s victory over France in 1862.Events in South Omaha were canceled in 2020 due to COVID-19 restrictions. This year, organizers moved the celebration back five weeks to allow more people to be vaccinated.A three-day festival that will feature live music/entertainment, carnival rides, food, exhibitors, health fair, MISS coronation, games and concerts.The weekend kicks off on Friday with a carnival that includes rides and midway games lining 24th Street. The carnival will run throughout the entire weekend. Also on Friday, coronation takes place at 7 p.m. hosted by Marina and Gaby from Telemundo Nebraska and Radio Lobo.In addition on Friday at 7 p.m. on the plaza stage the Los Horoscopos de Durango y La Consentida Banda Brisa will perform.To kick off Saturday the largest Cinco De Mayo Parade in the Midwest begins at 11 a.m. The parade route marches down the historic South 24 Street and features, incredible floats, marching bands, unique entertainers, businesses and organizations that strive to give back to the community to celebrate their heritage. ​Following the parade, the Cinco de Mayo Fiesta begins. It will include live music on the Omaha Performing Arts Stage, concerts on the plaza stage, a Greater Omaha food court, a beer garden and exhibitors.Also on Saturday, the Cinco De Mayo Health will take place at noon. The festival brings in area health institution experts to provide a variety of health information and free screenings, with health professionals on hand to answer questions.Following the health fair, Oye Como Va will perform on the plaza stage at 2 p.m. For your evening activities on Saturday, join NFM for an experience like no other. A silent disco fiesta featuring three of Omaha's premier DJs playing the hottest music in Spanish and English.Rounding out the weekend on Sunday is Mariachi Mass. It will be led by a traditional mariachi and Assumption-Guadalupe Catholic Church. Also on Sunday afternoon experience the Vaqueros exhibiting their Baile de Caballos! Come celebrate 100 years of Mexican festivals that bring in over 250,000 visitors from six surrounding states.
