DURGAPUR: A tusker which had migrated from Jharkhand and was roaming the forests of Bankura with a chain in its leg was tranquilised by foresters on Thursday to remove it. A group of six veterinary surgeons and tranquilizing experts — after almost a 10-hour operation — successfully removed the chain.
This was the second time in a month that the jumbo had to be tranquilized for treatment.
In May, a part of the chain had been removed by foresters at Sonamukhi.
“An adult tusker was treated at Babaya forest in Barjora range under Bankura North division. A team of six vets were present, along with five tranquilizing teams and a hullah party. The team removed the chain stuck in its front right leg. It was a well-planned and well-executed operation, and the animal responded to treatment very well. Four guards will monitor the elephant for the next few days,” said chief wildlife warden VK Yadav.
“We started tracking the jumbo at Bankura from 7 in the morning. It was finally tranquilized around 4pm. The chain that was biting into its skin was removed,” said chief conservator of forest, central circle, S Kulandaivel.
The surgery was finally over at 5pm.
DFO, Bankura north division and DFO, Bankura south division, were also present. Tranquilizing teams from the wildlife headquarters in Kolkata, Burdwan division, Panchet division (Bishnupur) and Bankura North division were there, Yadav added.
