CHENNAI:
Gowri, a chimpanzee in Chennai’s
Vandalur zoo, gave birth to a baby on Wednesday.
Zoo officials said both the mother and the baby were healthy. The mother is carrying the baby on its chest throughout the day and feeding it. At night, the baby is separated from the mother.
The zoo got a pair of chimpanzees –
Gombe and Gowri -- from
Singapore zoo in 2005. After 16 years of their arrival to Vandalur, the pair got a baby.
The zoo had recorded the birth of two male chimpanzees --Anand and
Vijay -- in the mid-1990s.
