Monsoon has already covered northern parts of Maharashtra by June 9-10, while it normally covers only south Maharashtra by that time.
Warning for fishermen in place
Strong winds with speed reaching 40-50 kmph gusting to 60kmph likely to prevail along and off North Maharashtra coast on June 12-16. Fishermen are advised not to venture along and off North Maharashtra coast during the above mentioned period, IMD said.
The Santacruz observatory has so far recorded 641.3mm of rain, which is 526.5mm above normal beginning from June 1.
In the 12 hours of Saturday from 8.30am-8.30pm, the IMD Santacruz observatory recorded 64.8mm of rain.
All citizens need to take precautions as widespread rainfall activity is expected over the region during the period with heavy to very heavy rainfall at a few places with extremely heavy falls at isolated places.
IMD downgrades rain alert for Mumbai, Thane as heavy rainfall belt shifts southwards
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Saturday evening downgraded its "red alert" warning of "extremely heavy rain" in Mumbai and neighbouring Thane district for the next two days. The warning has been now changed to "orange alert", which means "heavy to very heavy rain". "Extremely heavy rainfall belt has shifted south wards. So warnings are downgraded. Still, IMD expects heavy to very heavy rainfall in the city and suburbs," said Shubhangi Bhute, deputy director, IMD Mumbai.
Monsoon makes rapid progress, covers north Maharashtra by June 11
