DIBRUGARH: A 34-year-old tribal man was lynched by a
mob on suspicion of being a
cattle thief near
Doomdooma in Assam’s
Tinsukia district, leading to the detention of 12 people on Sunday even as the police rushed to scotch rumours about the victim being tied up and tortured for several hours before the cops were called.
Tinsukia SP Debojit Deuri said the deceased, identified as Sarat
Moran, had previously been arrested in a different case.
He was accosted by villagers and attacked after being spotted loitering in Korjonga village with an alleged accomplice on Saturday.
While Moran bore the brunt of the mob assault, the other alleged intruder escaped in the melee. A team from
Baghjan police station took him to a Doomdooma hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries. “Neither he nor the other person was found in possession of any animal,” SP Debojit Deuri said.
