Oregon reports 370 new cases and 10 new deaths

Oregon has reported 370 new cases of COVID-19, and 10 new deaths.

That brings the state’s cumulative case count to 204,291, and the death toll to 2,726, according to the Oregon Health Authority.

Marion County reported 35 new cases. Polk County reported seven new cases.

Other counties’ new cases were: Baker (1), Benton (8), Clackamas (30), Clatsop (1), Columbia (4), Coos (2), Crook (11), Deschutes (85), Douglas (17), Harney (1), Hood River (4), Jackson (15), Jefferson (1), Josephine (8), Klamath (10), Lane (23), Linn (11), Malheur (2), Multnomah (59), Umatilla (8), Union (1), Washington (22) and Yamhill (4).

There were 173 hospitalized patients with COVID-19. Of those, 41 were in intensive care and 20 were on ventilators.

Oregon has administered an average of 15,761 COVID-19 vaccine doses per day over the past week.

As of Thursday, 1.99 million people in Oregon had completed a vaccine series, and 311,768 million had received at least one dose.

OHA did not release details of the 10 new deaths.

Salem Hospital’s year-long COVID-19 outbreak is over, state health officials say

For the first time in more than a year, Salem Hospital is not on the Oregon Health Authority's list of active COVID-19 workplace outbreaks.

The hospital’s outbreak, with a total of 196 cases, lasted from May 27, 2020 through June 3, 2021, making it one of the state’s longest and largest.

In a statement, hospital spokeswoman Lisa Wood said no employee cases were traced to infection at the hospital.

"OHA includes family members of individuals who test positive in their cumulative number, so the number is not reflective of the number of employees who have tested positive," she said. "While one infection is too many, with more than 5,000 employees, there will be a certain number who contract COVID through community transmission, and our infection rate mirrors the infection rate of the community."

A large outbreak at Peoples Church in Salem, with 89 cases since April 6, 2021, also is resolved, OHA said in its weekly COVID-19 report.

Church officials previously said its outbreak simply reflected an outbreak in the community and not spread among church employees and members.

The report shows 59 active workplace outbreaks statewide for facilities with at least 30 workers and at least five cases. That’s up from 53 active outbreaks last week.

There have been 22,611 cases and 117 deaths associated with all Oregon workplace outbreaks reported so far.

There now are two active workplace outbreaks in Marion and Polk counties:

  • Amazon Aumsville, with 181 cases since May 21, 2020.
  • Oregon State Hospital in Salem, with seven cases since May 23, 2021.

The report also shows 19 active COVID-19 outbreaks in senior and congregate living settings statewide, down from 31 last week.

So far, there have been 695 outbreaks with 14,583 cases and 1,348 deaths in those settings in Oregon.

There are six active outbreaks in those facilities in Marion and Polk counties:

  • Dallas Retirement Village Assisted Living, with 10 cases since April 15, 2021.
  • McKillop Residence, in Sublimity, with seven cases since May 10, 2021.
  • Boone Ridge Memory Care in Salem, with five cases since May 17, 2021.
  • Emerald Gardens, in Woodburn, with four cases since May 17, 2021.
  • Providence Benedictine Nursing Center in Mt. Angel, with six cases since May 28, 2021.
  • Mount Angel Towers Independent Living, with three cases since June 2, 2021.

The report shows COVID-19  cases declining for the sixth week in a row.

OHA reported 1,725 new cases between May 30 and June 5, a 26% decrease from the previous week and the lowest weekly total since last September.

New COVID-19 related hospitalizations also fell, from 190 to 112. That’s also the lowest since last September.

Reported deaths decreased from 50 to 20.

There were 72,443 COVID-19 tests performed during the week. Of those, 3.8% were positive, down from 5.4% the previous week.

People age 70 and older have accounted for 75% of COVID-19 related deaths, OHA reported, and for 38% of hospitalizations.
