A woman was killed and her husband, who is a local Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leader, wounded in a firing incident that took place on Thursday within the limits of the Gulshan-e-Maymar police station.

Police said the couple were shot by unidentified persons near Afghan Basti, Northern Bypass, while they were travelling in a car. As a result, Essa Khan, 40, son of Toor Khan, and his wife Bakhtawar Bibi, 37, were wounded.

The injured man continued to drive the car and reached a private hospital in Gulshan-e-Iqbal. Police said the man was shot in his leg and shoulder while his wife was shot once in her head. She was put on a ventilator at the hospital but could not survive. The man was treated and his condition was stated to be out of danger.

Police said Essa is the president of the PTI’s Manghopir chapter. A score of PTI leaders, including Sindh Assembly member Raja Azhar, also visited the hospital. According to police, the couple were shot while they were returning to their home in Afghan Basti along with their minor son after paying a visit to a doctor.

The shooters came on two motorcycles and were armed with Kalashnikovs and pistols. Police suspect that the incident could be the result of a personal enmity. They said they also could not find any empty bullet shell from the crime scene. Further investigations are under way.
