Preston North End midfielder Daniel Johnson has been named in Jamaica's 60-man provisional squad list for the upcoming CONACAF Gold Cup.

Why such a significant number of players, we hear you ask? Well, each Gold Cup contender reveal squads of up to 60 players before eventually trimming down to 23 players prior to the tournament.

It's been no secret that Jamaica have been trying to expand its player pool with English internationals who also have Jamaican eligibility, with West Ham striker Michail Antonio the latest who has pledged his allegiance to the Reggae Boyz.

Reading's Liam Moore and Watford's Andre Gray are two of the other recent dual-national additions to Theodore Whitmore's squad, and they're both included on the preliminary squad - as is Bayer Leverkusen star Leon Bailey, Swansea City ace Jamal Lowe and Brentford promotion-winner Ethan Pinnock.

Johnson is starting to establish himself as a regular feature in the Jamaican squad after making his international debut in November 2020 and while opposing countries like the United States are likely to leave out some household European names so they can recuperate after their gruelling domestic schedule, the North End ace is still expected to play a part in the Reggae Boyz squad.

He scored his first goal in a second friendly against Saudi Arabia last November, helping Jamaica to a 2-1 victory through a stunning individual strike.

The 2021 Gold Cup will take place from 10 July to 1 August and, for the first time in its history, will have a preliminary phase, which will be played between 2 and 6 July. What that does mean is, if Jamaica advance to the final stages of the tournament, Johnson is likely to miss the opening weekend of the Championship campaign, depending on how Frankie McAvoy and his coaching staff assess his condition.

Jamaica are in Group C with Costa Rica and Suriname while one other nation from the preliminary phase will join them with two qualification spots up for grabs in each group.

The tournament is being held in the USA, with Jamaica's group stage games being played in Orlando and Texas, while the final is to be hosted at the Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas.
