Shaqiri maintains Switzerland’s last-16 hopes at Euro 2020

Sports Desk, Jun 20 (EFE).- Xherdan Shaqiri struck twice Sunday to seal Switzerland’s 3-1 win over Turkey and sustain the Alpine side’s hopes of reaching the Euro 2020 knockout stage on the strength of their third-place finish in Group A.

Switzerland took the lead six minutes into the game, when forward Haris Seferovic fired home from just outside the penalty area.

Shortly before the half-hour mark, Liverpool’s Shaqiri curled a shot from outside the area into the top left corner of Turkish keeper Ugurcan Çakir’s goal to double the advantage.

Turkey pulled one back in the 62nd minute on a delightful left-footed curler from midfielder Irfan Can Kahveci, but Shaqiri put the game out of reach six minutes later when he seized on a smart low cross from Steven Zuber to make it 3-1.

Last-place Turkey are out, but the Swiss can reach the round of 16 as one of the four third-place teams. EFE ta/dr
