Scotland has recorded a weekend spike in the number of Covid patients being treated in hospitals across the country.

Figures published by the Scottish Government and Public Health Scotland today show 158 people are currently being treated for the virus in the nation's hospitals compared to 128 on Friday.

The rise comes as a further 1,250 new cases of coronavirus have been recorded in Scotland in the last 24 hours – including 112 in Ayrshire.

Public Health Scotland say the national figure is lower than expected due to a data flow issue in NHS Grampian over the weekend.

They organisation say the problem has been resolved and will be reflected in tomorrow’s figures.

No new deaths were recorded overnight meaning Scotland's death toll from the virus remains at 7,692.

A total of 14 people are receiving treatment for the disease in intensive care nationally which is up two from Friday.

In terms of Public Health Scotland's rolling seven-day infection rate per 100,000 population, Dundee City has the highest rate in the country — at 303.4 as of Sunday, June 10.

City of Edinburgh has the second-highest infection rate at 230.5 while East Ayrshire is now third with 225.4.

Of Ayrshire's remaining two local authorities, South Ayrshire has the highest rate of 216.7 compared to North Ayrshire's 161.8.

Of the 112 new cases attributed to Ayrshire, 46 were in East Ayrshire, 40 in North Ayrshire and 26 in South Ayrshire.
