BALASORE/BHUBANESWAR: The state government on Monday denied the administration of two doses of Covid-19 vaccine, Covishield, to a 51-year-old man in Mayurbhanj district within a gap of five minutes, contrary to his allegation.
Additional chief secretary (health) Pradipta Kumar Mohapatra said, "The director family welfare (DFW) was asked to verify and submit the findings.
A team comprising two Ayush medical officers and three male supervisors visited the house of the patient. It was ascertained that repeat vaccination was not actually done."
Prasanna Kumar Sahu, a native of Bachuripada village under the Betnoti block of Mayurbhanj district, had gone to a vaccination camp at Satyasai Government High School in Khuntapur on Saturday. After completing the formality of registration, he had stood in a queue and was administered the vaccine when his turn came.
"I was advised by the healthcare staff to stay at the centre for 30 minutes after vaccination for observation of any adverse event following immunisation. While I was waiting on a chair, I was administered another dose within five minutes," Sahu had said.
He had added, "By the time I could figure out where to go after taking the first dose, someone came and administered the second one as well. When I said I had been given an injection about five minutes ago by another nurse, the second nurse wouldn't listen." Both the doses were reportedly administered on the same arm.
Following the incident, a panic-stricken Prasanna was asked by the healthcare workers present at the centre to undergo observation for two hours. "I was also told not to disclose the matter and visit the nearby government hospital in case of any exigency" he had said.
Rajendra Behera, supervisor of the vaccination centre, said, "Prasanna didn't leave the chair after being administered the first dose. When the nurse saw him seated there, she gave him the shot second time unintentionally. He should have raised an alarm immediately" Rupabhanu Mishra, chief district medical and public health officer (Mayurbhanj), has said, "Sahu's condition is stable."
