Rain for days to come as greater Brisbane remains locked down

Heavy rainfall is forecast for Brisbane as the city remains in lockdown on Saturday, while some parts of Queensland will cop totals of up to 80 millimetres.

The Bureau of Meteorology predicted on Friday there would be widespread rainfall through the south-east coast and southern Darling Downs region of up to 50 millimetres, with the possibility of thunderstorms.

The south-east of the state, including Brisbane, was forecast to receive between 15 and 25 millimetres over coming days.

A severe thunderstorm was a slight risk, with heavy rainfall from Emerald to the Lockyer Valley if thunderstorms repeatedly moved across the same area.

Meteorologist Kimba Wong said heavy rainfall would continue on Saturday.

“It’s going to be a pretty wet couple of days for the broader south-east, including Brisbane,” she said.

“That’s with the cloud band thickening up over the south-east ahead of an upper trough and giving us some higher rainfall totals.

“You couldn’t rule out some higher totals if you get showers over the same locations a couple times or if there’s storms. There’s certainly chance to have a storm around.”

She said the Wide Bay, central Queensland and Capricorn regions would see more significant wet weather.

“Long-term rainfall deficiencies are still going up there so it’s really nice to see some rainfall coming through over the next couple days and they’ll probably cop the highest totals accumulating, with this same system moving through,” she said.

She said the regions were forecast to receive between 30 and 60 millimetres, but isolated pockets could receive up to 80 millimetres of rain.

The system was expected to move off the coast by late Saturday or early Sunday, with Monday forecast to be clear.
