3 suspected JMB men held in Kolkata hail from Gopalganj: Indian police
The three suspected Jamaat-ul-Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB) terrorists, who were arrested from south Kolkata's Haridebpur area yesterday, are from Bangladesh's Gopalganj district, say police.
The three men identified as Naziur Rahman Pavel (30), Mikhail Khan (30), and Rabiul Islam (22) were arrested by Kolkata Police's Special Task Force (STF), reports our New Delhi correspondent quoting STF Joint Commissioner V Solomon Nesakumar.
Police are trying to find out if the three men had plans to carry out a terror attack in Kolkata, he told a press conference in the city yesterday afternoon.
The suspects were staying in an apartment at Haridebpur which they had rented using forged documents, Nesakumar said.
"They informed the house owner that they were in Kolkata on medical grounds. We are trying to find out who else is involved." He added.
The trio had crossed the border early this year. They posed as traders and used to sell fruits and mosquito nets, police said.
Jihadi literature and documents were seized from the suspects, said the joint commissioner of STF, adding that "fake identity cards were also seized from them. Besides, there is a diary that contains the names of top JMB leaders."
"We have scrutinised their social media profiles and there is proof of link with JMB," said Aparajita Rai, deputy commissioner of police, STF.
STF sources said it is suspected that they were in Kolkata to raise funds for JMB. They said STF is likely to contact Bangladesh's Rapid Action Battalion to get details regarding JMB's new plans in West Bengal.
According to STF officials, Naziur was the leader of the three-member group. He seldom stepped out of the house in Haridebpur.
He was a former BGB personnel but later got involved with terror outfit Harkatul Jihadi Islami and was jailed in Bangladesh on two separate occasions for nearly three years, they said.
Mikhail Khan used to maintain social media accounts and establish preliminary contacts with new recruits and those who are ready to provide money, STF sources said.
