BHOPAL: In a tragic incident, more than 25 people fell into a well in Vidisha district of Madhya Pradesh on Thursday night after its wall caved in. The wall collapsed due to the weight of a massive crowd which had gathered around to rescue a child, who had also fallen into the well.
Two villagers have lost their lives, while 16 have been rescued and rushed to a hospital.
The water from the well is being pumped out, Vidisha guardian minister Vishwas Sarang had told PTI from the spot.
"I pay homage to those who lost their lives in the accident. Rescue work is underway," tweeted MP chief minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan.
Villagers had crammed at the spot to observe and assist in the child's rescue. The incident was reported from the Lalpathar area around 7:30pm.

DGP Vivek Johri said that the exact number of people who might have fallen inside is not clear yet. Chouhan was in the district for 'kanyadan' of three adopted girls.
He asked minister Vishwas Sarang to reach the spot and monitor rescue operations. Sources say there were more than 50 people at the spot. The CM has also directed officers to conduct a high-level inquiry into the incident, as well as provide all possible medical assistance to the injured.
There was difficulty in carrying out rescue operations due to inadequate light. Police say the boundary wall and the wall inside caved in. According to locals, the well is around 50 feet deep with a water level of about 20 feet.
