The India Meteorological Department also sounded a ‘red alert’ for Mumbai and other districts in the Konkan region, forecasting extremely heavy rainfall at isolated places in the next 24 hours.
Throughout Monday, that is in nine hours ending 5.30 pm, the IMD’s Santacruz observatory recorded 35.2 mm rain and its Colaba counterpart 22.6 mm, most of which was recorded till noon.
Mumbai has received 920.1 mm rain, surpassing its average normal rainfall for July.
IMD has predicted heavy to very heavy rainfall on 20th July over Jammu Division, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand and Haryana. East and adjoing central India will experience fairly widespread to widespread spells along with isolated heavy rainfall. During the next 24 hours Uttar Pradesh, north Madhya Pradesh and east Rajasthan have froecast of moderate to severe thunderstorm with lightning.
Isolated extremely heavy rainfall is very likely over Konkan & Goa & adjoining Ghat areas of Madhya Maharashtra on July 21 and 22.
Five member of a family on Monday, invovling a couple and their three children aged between three and 12, were killed after a landslide in the Kalwa area in Thane city. The couple’s two other daughters were also injured in the mishap. Four other houses in the area were also damaged.
A day after heavy rainfall battered the city 400 cars, auto-rickshaws and sports bikes were submerged in the underground parking lot in Kandivali’s Thakur complex.
A portion of Gholai Nagar hill came crashing down on the Durga Chawl in the Gholai Nagar area in Kalwa east, this occured around 11.00 am, the Thane Regional Disaster Management Cell (RDMC) said.
Meanwhile, 136.83 mm rainfall was recorded Monday until 8.30 pm. There was waterlogging at 33 locations in Thane city and some parts of neighbouring Mumbra, Bhiwandi and Kalyan townships Monday. There were also 15 tree fall incidents and six landslide and wall collapse incidents.
An off-shore trough at mean sea level is likely to persist in next three to four days from Maharashtra coast to Karnataka coast.
Four members of a family died and another was injured after the roof of their house collapsed following rain in Patiala's Shutrana area, police said on Tuesday.
The incident took place on Monday night at Matauli village in Shutrana. All the family members were sleeping when the roof of the house caved in due to rain, according to police.
Mukhtiar Singh (40), his son Vanshdeep Singh (14) and daughters Simranjit Kaur (13) and Kamaldeep Kaur (10) died after being buried under the debris, police said.
Mukhtiar's wife Surinder Kaur suffered injuries and was admitted to a hospital, they said. (PTI)
AFTER an exceptionally heavy rainfall between Saturday – Sunday, the rain peaked in the adjoining areas of Mumbai – Thane, Navi Mumbai, Kalyan – Dombivali since Monday.
In 24 hours ending at 8:30 am Tuesday, the India Meteorological Department’s (IMD) Santacruz observatory recorded 38.4 mm rain and the Colaba observatory recorded 35.4 mm rain. Both fall in the moderate category of rainfall.
In comparison, during the same period, areas in Navi Mumbai— Vashi recorded 121 mm rain, Belapur and Nerul recorded 105 mm rain, Airoli 147 mm, Koparkhairane 168 mm and Thane district recorded 146 mm in the 24 hours ending at 8:30 am on Tuesday. Read more
A day after several parts of the national capital experienced heavy rain and waterlogging, the rain continued to lash Delhi for the second day in a row on Tuesday. Three people also died in weather-related incidents yesterday.
On Monday, the maximum temperature dipped to 26.5 degrees Celsius, eight degrees below normal, and the minimum was recorded as 24 degrees Celsius, three degrees below normal for this time of the year.
According to officials at IMD, most parts of the city will see light rain throughout the day on Tuesday.
Light rain/drizzle is expected to continue till Friday and the maximum temperature is expected to remain under 35 degrees Celsius. Read more

Mercury rose by a few notches in the national capital on Tuesday, with the minimum temperature settling at 27.2 degrees Celsius, officials said.
The city received an average of 69.6 mm of rainfall till 8:30 am, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD).
On Monday, Delhi had recorded a minimum temperature of 24.2 degrees Celsius, and a high of 26.5 degrees Celsius, eight notches below the normal.
The maximum temperature on Tuesday is likely to be around 33 degrees Celsius.
After much delay, monsoon arrived in the national capital on July 12 as the city received showers bringing relief to people from the sweltering heat.
Since then, the capital city is getting spells of showers almost every day.
The minimum temperature on Tuesday morning was recorded at 27.2 degrees Celsius, the IMD said.
However, the relative humidity was at a high of 96 per cent in the morning.
"Monsoon has arrived in Delhi, although after much delay. It was initially expected to hit here late June," an IMD official said.
The rainfall recorded at various observatories were -- Safdarjung (69.6 mm); Palam (99.3 mm); Lodhi Road (62 mm); Ayanagar (51.6 mm); Ridge (58 mm). Readings of Safdarjung Observatory are considered the official readings for the city. (PTI)
AFTER A brief respite on Sunday night, heavy rain accompanied by gusty winds continued to pound Mumbai leading to waterlogging in various places and disruptions in the suburban train system.
Mumbai recorded 235 mm rainfall in 24 hours until 8.30 am Sunday. The rainfall eased late Sunday with the city receiving 70.4 mm of rain in the 24 hours ending 8.30 am Monday.
The showers picked up the intensity in the early hours of the day again with the island city recording 6.29 mm rain, western suburbs 24.4 mm and eastern suburbs 40.57 mm rain in just four hours till Monday noon. Read more
Three people died and one person was injured in the three-storey building collapse incident in Khawaspur in Haryana's Gurgaon district, police said on Monday after an around 20-hour operation, amid heavy rains, to rescue those stuck under its debris. The building collapsed on Sunday night and initially, it was feared that five to six people were trapped under the rubble, a senior police officer said. But after verification, it turned out that there were four people, he said, adding that one body was pulled out from the debris on Sunday night and two more on Monday. The building was located on the Pataudi road in Farrukhnagar in Gurgaon, and according to Manesar Deputy Commissioner of Police Varun Singla, a warehouse company had built it to house labourers. --PTI
Three people were feared drowned following heavy rains in Maharashtra's Raigad district on Monday, officials said, while the IMD sounded a 'red alert' for Mumbai and other districts in the Konkan region, predicting extremely heavy rainfall at isolated places over the next 24 hours. Mumbai and its neighbouring districts of Thane, Palghar and Raigad have been witnessing heavy rains since the last couple of days. The torrential rains over the weekend claimed 30 lives in the metropolis. On Monday, the Raigad disaster management department said three people were feared drowned at separate places in the district. It said one Suresh Koli (42) went for fishing in the Arabian Sea on a small boat which capsized in the waters. Efforts were on to trace Koli. --PTI
Five members of a family, including three minors, were killed on Monday evening after a boulder rolled down and crashed into a slum colony due to incessant rains in Kalwa area of Thane district, officials said. Thane Municipal Corporation's Regional Disaster Management Cell chief Santosh Kadam said the incident took place in Gholai Nagar, where five people - a husband-wife duo and their three children - were buried alive. The bodies have been retrieved from the debris by search and rescue personnel, he said. --PTI
A 27-year-old man drowned at a railway underpass while he was allegedly trying to take a selfie in the rains. Police said the incident took place in Southeast Delhi’s Pul Prahladpur on Monday afternoon. The street where the man was standing was waterlogged due to the rains on Sunday night and the Monday. Police suspect the man slipped and drowned.
The deceased, identified as Ravi Chautala, was pulled out from the water at the underpass.

Light to moderate monsoon rains occurred at many places over eastern Uttar Pradesh and over most parts of the western region of the state Monday, the meteorological department said. Thunderstorm accompanied by lightning occurred at isolated places over the state, it said. Officials said rainfall was recorded in Lakhimpur Kheri, Bijnor, Etawah, Kanpur Dehat, Shahjahanpur, Rampur, Moradabad, Balrampur, Banda, Pilibhit, Sitapur, Bahraich, Deoria, Mirzapur, Bareilly, Shravasti, Sambhal, Hamirpur, Gorakhpur, Kannauj, Auraiya, Mathura, Baghpat, Basti, Agra and Budaun. Heavy to very heavy rains lashed several parts of Rajasthan in the last 24 hours, with Behror in Alwar recording a maximum of 195 mm rainfall, according to a Meteorological Department report issued on Monday.
Neemrana, Bansur, Mandawar (all in Alwar) received 190, 136 and 124 mm rains respectively while Buhana (Jhunjhunu) and Ladpura (Kota) recorded 117 and 101 degrees respectively from Sunday till Monday morning, the report said.
Many other places also recorded below 100 mm rains during this period.
The department has predicted heavy to very heavy rainfall at some places in Alwar and Jhunjhunu districts later in the day. (PTI)
As heavy rain lashed Delhi on Monday morning, complaints poured in from across the city to the Public Works Department (PWD) flood control room about waterlogging, clogged drains and fallen trees.
The official handle of the Delhi Traffic Police tweeted there was heavy waterlogging at Kashapera underpass and advised commuters against using the route. A resident of sector 25, Rohini complained that sewers that had been desilted were blocked again.
Another resident posted a photo of two trees that had fallen and blocked the road at Vikaspuri. While some pertained to roads that come under the MCDs, many have been registered by the PWD. Another waterlogging complaint from Najafgarh was registered by the department. Read more

As many as 116 tourists, including 78 women and five children, were rescued by police and a team of fire officials after they got stranded at Kharghar Hills in Maharashtra’s Navi Mumbai on Sunday.
According to the police, entry to the Kharghar Hills and Pandavkada waterfall in Panvel area has been restricted owing to accidents during monsoon in the past. However, on Sunday, people from nearby areas managed to evade police and trek to the hills from sector 5 in Kharghar. The police said due to heavy rain the water level of a stream behind the golf course increased due to which the tourists got stranded. Read more
A day after heavy showers battered Mumbai, the rain intensity reduced briefly on Monday morning and picked up momentum again, leading to water-logging at some places and disrupting local train services, officials said.
On Sunday, 30 people were killed in the metropolis in rain-related incidents, including 19 in Mahul area of Chembur where a retaining wall collapsed on some houses after a landslide.
On Monday, no fresh death was reported, an official from the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) said.
However, after a brief spell of reduced intensity, the rains picked up pace again, causing inundation in some areas.
Local train services of the Central Railway were affected due to water-logging on tracks between Vikhroli and Bhandup following heavy showers in parts of the suburbs, CR's chief spokesperson Shivaji Sutar said.
The suburban train services were suspended in that section of the main line from 10.35 am to 10.50 am as a precautionary measure, he said.
The station yard in neighbouring Thane was also water-logged and as a result, trains were running slow, railway sources said.
In the Kasara Ghat section, located about 130 km from Mumbai, a mudslide occurred on one of the three rail lines early Monday morning, Sutar said.
Traffic was affected only on the down line due to the mudslide, but trains were running on the middle and up lines, according to the Central Railway. (PTI)
A day after heavy downpour wreaked havoc in Mumbai and claimed 30 lives, the rain intensity reduced on Monday, bringing some relief to citizens of the metropolis, officials said.
The local train and road transport services, which were badly affected due to the torrential rains and water-logging on Sunday, were now running normal, they said.
On Sunday, 19 people died in Mahul area of Chembur where a retaining wall collapsed on some houses after a landslide, 10 died as some shanties collapsed in suburban Vikhroli, while one person died in Bhandup area where a forest department wall collapsed.
On Monday, no fresh death was reported, an official from the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) said.
The eastern suburbs of Mumbai recorded the highest 90.65 mm rainfall in the 24-hour period ending at 8 am on Monday, as compared to 48.88 mm rainfall in the island city and 51.89 mm rainfall in western suburbs, he said.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) earlier issued an "orange alert" for Mumbai on Monday, predicting "heavy to very heavy rain at few places".
According to BMC officials, there is a forecast of moderate to heavy rain/thundershowers in the city and suburbs with the possibility of very heavy to extremely heavy rainfall in isolated places. (PTI)

Few hours of overnight rain left several parts of Gurgaon waterlogged on Monday morning, with the city’s traffic police warning people against stepping out, unless it’s necessary.
“Due to incessant rains in Gurugram since yesterday, there is waterlogging at some places and slow movement of traffic. Therefore, we request all of you to step out of your homes only if there is some important work. Sorry for the inconvenience,” the Gurugram Traffic Police tweeted.
The waterlogged stretches of the city include IFFCO Chowk, Hero Honda Chowk, Signature Tower, Galleria market red light, Kanhai Chowk, Wazirabad Chowk, Himgiri Chowk, Sheetla Mata Mandir road, and the area near HUDA City Centre. Read more
Three members of a family, including a mother-daughter duo, were killed while one person was reportedly missing after a cloudburst hit two adjacent villages in Uttarakhand's Uttarkashi district, officials said on Monday.
Those killed in the incident that took place on Sunday night in Mandav village were identified as Madhuri Devi (36), Ritu Devi (32) and her three-year-old daughter Trishvi, Uttarakashi's Disaster Management Officer Devendra Patwal said, adding that all the bodies have been recovered.
One person is reported to be missing after the cloudburst in the neighbouring Kankrari village. A search operation is underway to find him, he said.
Police and State Disaster Response Fund (SDRF) personnel launched rescue operations in the affected areas immediately after being informed and succeeded in rescuing most of the people trapped in slush.
Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami expressed grief over the loss of lives in the incident and asked the Uttarkashi District Magistrate to carry out relief and rescue operations in the affected areas on priority.
Meanwhile, two labourers who got stranded in a tunnel of the Chibro hydel project in Vikasnagar area of Dehradun district on Sunday evening are still trapped there. Efforts are underway to rescue them, Kalsi police station incharge Rituraj Singh said.
They had fainted inside the tunnel due to lack of oxygen, he said. (PTI)
