BJP lost in the assembly polls due to overconfidence: Suvendu Adhikari

Leader of Opposition in West Bengal Assembly Suvendu Adhikari challenged West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, saying she will not be able to win the Nandigram seat despite moving court and even if recounting is done. He also said the complacency about victory led to failure of BJP in the recently concluded state assembly polls.
In his first public statement about the BJP's defeat in the West Bengal assembly polls, Suvendu Adhikari said that the BJP lost in the assembly polls due to overconfidence of certain leaders and sense of complacent attitude about the party’s victory in 170 seats.

Adhikari said this smugness and overconfidence led to lack of understanding of the emerging ground situation, Adhikari said on Sunday at a grassroot meeting in Chandipur area of Purba Medinipur district.

"We did well in the first two poll phases in these areas of assembly segments (East Midnapore) and many of our leaders became overconfident. They started believing that the BJP will secure 170-180 seats in the elections. However, there was lack of groundwork and it cost us dearly," the BJP leader & Nandigram MLA said.

He said, speaking to the workers, it is always necessary to work hard at the ground level and setting up targets, which are realistic.

High decibel campaigns were addressed in Bengal by the Prime Minister, Union Home Minister and several other central ministers and Chief Ministers from other states.

“The BJP must remember that Mamata Banerjee’s social welfare projects and development worked magic among the people and the Trinamool’s victory was people’s mandate against the BJP heavyweights' sustained campaign against the Chief Minister,” Trinamool Congress spokesperson Kunal Ghosh said.

“Many BJP leaders predicted that the saffron camp will cross 200 seats. When Suvendu claimed repeatedly that the saffron party will cross 180 seats, why is he criticizing others," Ghosh said.
