    India’s many geographical indication-registered products reflect the country’s rich heritage and diversity. There is still a lot of scope to highlight their uniqueness in global markets, but that is not going to be easy.

    Last year, India applied for a geographical indication (GI) tag to get sole ownership of basmati rice in the European Union. In its application, published in EU’s official journal in September 2020, India said basmati is a special long grain aromatic rice grown and produced in a particular region of the Indian subcontinent.
