Delhi’s Sarojini Nagar Export Market Reopens

The Export Market in Sarojini Nagar has reopened as of Wednesday, a day after it was closed in protest of a government order to close it. The walkout by shopkeepers and market groups has been called off.

The Export Market, which has 200 merchants, was shut down on July 17 for violating Covid regulations. A meeting between district officials and delegates from the Sarojini Nagar market association was conducted on Monday. Market associations voted to close the entire market until the Export Market was allowed to reopen following the meeting.

A new government decree issued Tuesday night permitted the Export Market to operate on Wednesday if certain conditions were met.

“Now, therefore, in exercise of powers conferred under section 33 of the Disaster Management Act, 2005, the undersigned, in his capacity as Incident Commander, Vasant Vihar, New Delhi District, hereby directs that the operation of the Export Market, Sarojini Nagar, is permitted from July 21, 2021, subject to strict adherence to various orders of the Delhi Disaster Management Authority,” according to the order.

During the talks, it was decided that the market associations would give ID cards to all shopkeepers and that only those with these cards would be allowed within the grounds by the police. It was also decided that shopkeepers would ensure that the porch space in front of their store was free of encroachment and that only a small number of people would be assigned to work inside the stores.
