RAIGAD: At least 35 dead bodies were extracted from a landslide in Talai village in Raigad district on Friday afternoon.
The landslide had occurred on Thursday evening but the rescue team could not reach the affected site due to waterlogging and roads getting washed away.
Guardian minister Aditi Tatkare said that there were 25-30 houses that have been flattened and more people are feared to be trapped under the debris.
"Due to disruption in connectivity, the landslide was reported only around Thursday evening and we couldn't reach the site despite repeated attempts, due to heavy rainfall and waterlogging," said Tatkare.
Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray, who reviewed the flood situation in Konkan division and Western Maharashtra, said that heavy rains in these areas are causing a delay in rescue operations. "With the water receding, the rescue operations have picked up pace. We are also deploying the army, navy and air force for rescue operations," he said.
Relief and rehabilitation minister Vijay Wadettiwar said that at least 10-15 people are still feared to be trapped under the debris. There is heavy waterlogging in Mahad taluka in Raigad since Thursday. The district received over 200 mm of rainfall in less than 24 hours.
Meanwhile, yet another landslide has been reported in Satara district and around 5-6 houses have been flattened under the debris. "We are trying to reach the site, but the incessant rains are making it difficult for us," said minister of state Sambhauraje Desai.
