A 33-year-old visitor died after he fell off a cliff in Maui Thursday afternoon.

Police, firefighters and medics responded to a report of a man from Cerritos, Calif., who fell into the ocean from a cliff at Waianapanapa State Park near Hana at about 4:40 p.m.

According to the Maui Police Department, witnesses said the man was standing in the cliff area when he fell about 20 feet into the water.

High surf and strong currents hampered rescue efforts as the current swept the man further out to sea and underwater, Maui officials said.

More than an hour later, fire rescue crews located the unresponsive man about 30 feet below the water’s surface.

Crews brought him to shore and medics pronounced him dead.

Positive identification is pending.

Police said there were no signs of foul play.
