UPDATE 7:10 a.m. (7/27/21): The Bedford Fire Department shared additional details and pictures of the fatal crash that shut down Route 460 East in Bedford County for several hours Monday night.

According to the department, crews responded to the 7900 block of East Lynchburg Salem Turnpike at approximately 8 p.m. on Monday, July 26 for reports of a vehicle crash with entrapment.

When units arrived at the scene, they found an overturned, heavily-damaged vehicle blocking both eastbound lanes of the road. In addition, two victims — one in critical condition — were discovered outside of the vehicle rather than trapped inside.

Some of the first responders helped take care of the patients while others set up a landing zone for the Lifeguard 10 helicopter.

Virginia State Police has confirmed that one person died in the crash, but no other information has been released about the cause of the crash, the identity of the person killed, or the condition of the other person involved in the crash.


UPDATE 5:08 a.m. (7/27/21): The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) says all lanes of Route 460 in Bedford County near Goode are back open after Monday evening’s fatal crash.

In addition, the detour has been removed for Route 460 East between Bedford and Lynchburg, according to VDOT.


UPDATE 10:50 p.m.: Virginia State Police confirmed that one person is dead after the crash on Route 460 in Bedford County.

The crash took place just before 8 p.m. on Monday, July 26 at the 7900 block of East Lynchburg Salem Turnpike in Bedford County.

No other information has been released about the cause of the crash or the identity of the person killed.

A detour is still in place for eastbound drivers between Bedford and Lynchburg, though at last report, VDOT says one eastbound lane is open.


UPDATE 10:30 p.m.: A detour has been set up for drivers heading between Bedford and Lynchburg.

According to VDOT, the detour affects eastbound drivers on Route 460.

Drivers will exit Route 460 at Route 671 (Timber Ridge Road) and onto Forest Road (Route 221). Then, onto Thomas Jefferson Road (Route 811) and back onto Route 460 eastbound.


UPDATE 9:25 p.m.: A section of Route 460 in Bedford County has reopened.

An earlier crash completely shut down both the eastbound and westbound lanes of Route 460 between Bedford and Lynchburg.

VDOT says that the westbound lanes have reopened; however, eastbound lanes are still completely blocked.

Drivers heading between Bedford and Lynchburg should find an alternate route.


BEDFORD COUNTY, Va. (WFXR) – A crash along Route 460 in Bedford County has shut down all eastbound and westbound lanes.

The crash is located in the vicinity of Route 1403 (Dixie Lane) between Bedford and Lynchburg.

Drivers can expect significant delays if traveling in this area.

This is the second crash on Route 460 on Monday that has shut down the roadway. The earlier crash near Concord has since been cleared.
