A brand new Aldi supermarket is opening in east Lancashire bringing dozens of jobs to one town.

The Rossendale market town of Bacup is set to welcome the new discount supermarket on the former Forest Mill site.

The German-owned supermarket giant will bring the supermarket to the site off Henrietta Street; across the road from rivals Morrisons.

Rossendale-born Paul Nolan, director of Nolan Redshaw Chartered Surveyors who helped secure the new Aldi site, said: "In order to bring sustainable development to Bacup Town Centre and create jobs, the development would have to be linked to multiple food retailers.

"Bringing Aldi to Bacup will create over 50 jobs and provide consumer choice.

"It will also encourage residents to shop locally rather than travelling to larger towns nearby."

The store is 20,000 square feet in total with work now expected to start before the end of 2021.

Aldi is set to open the supermarket in 2023.

As part of the build, Aldi has to cough up £37,800 for a shared cycle/pedestrian route in a northerly direction from Henrietta Street towards Lee Street, on land between Morrisons and the River Irwell.

It also has to pay £4,000 for marker signs, £7,000 for a handrail and three lighting columns, and power to the steps located between Henrietta Street and Rochdale Road.
