Several ‘News of the World’ events planned by library

Elgin’s Gail Borden Library is holding several events in conjunction with its One Book, One Community program focused on Paulette Jiles’ novel, “News of the World.”

At 7 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 3, Elgin historian Jerry Turnquist will talk about what life was like in Elgin during the 1870s, the era the book is written about, in a Zoom program. To receive the link, register at http://attend.gailborden.info/event/5260155.

A group discussion of the book will be held at 7 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 12; a discussion of the book from the perspective of people who have lost their spouses — the main character is a widower — is scheduled for 11 a.m. Aug. 17; and a screening of the Tom Hanks movie based on the book will be presented at 1 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 24.

All three events are at the library’s main branch, 270 N. Grove Ave., Elgin.

Boys & Girls Club to unveil Dundee Township center

The Boys & Girls Club of Dundee Township is holding a public celebration from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday Aug. 26, for its new Impact Center at 251 Amarillo Drive in Carpentersville.

The Impact Center has more than 40,000 square feet of program space and is adjacent to Dundee-Crown High School, a news release said. Its tech and building labs are designed for hands-on learning projects.

The center’s focus will be a workforce readiness programs, and staff will work with high school students on developing individualized career pathway plans. It plans to offer soft skills training, guest speakers, facility tours, internships and summer job opportunities, the release said.

OrthoIllinois breaks ground on new clinic Friday

Bone and joint health care provider OrthoIllinois is holding a public groundbreaking event at 2 p.m. Friday, July 30, for a new clinic being built at 1550 N. Randall Road in Elgin.

The 49,000-square-foot facility, scheduled to open next spring. It will offer a variety of orthopedic care and therapies, including a walk-in urgent care clinic specializing in bone, joint and work-related injuries. Visit www.orthoillinois.com for more information.
