For the first time since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, Vancouver Island soccer fans will have an opportunity to see a live game in action as Pacific FC prepares for its 2021 home opener Friday.

The Vancouver Island-based Canadian Premier League (CPL) club will be facing off against Cavalry FC from Calgary.

The match — being held at Starlight Stadium in Langford — is slated to kickoff at 6:30 p.m. PT.

According to the club, the current provincial outdoor gathering guidelines will allow for up to 5,000 people at the stadium on game day.

It will be the first time the team plays a game on home turf and the first time fans will be allowed to watch from the stands since early 2020.

So far this season, Pacific FC has four wins, two losses and two draws and sits second overall in the league table.

The team is coming off a 4-2 win over Atlético Ottawa on July 21 — a game that saw attacker Alejandro Diaz score a hat trick for Pacific.

Fans attending the game on Friday will also find the Island Health Vax Van on-site, which will be offering anyone in attendance (age 12 or older) a chance to get their first dose of a COVID-19 vaccine without an appointment.

According to Island Health and Pacific FC, anyone who gets their first dose at the game from the Vax Van will be entered to win a “special prize” from the soccer club.

Following Friday’s home opener, Pacific FC will play two more home games at Starlight Stadium — one on Aug. 4 against Valour FC from Winnipeg and one on Aug. 7 against FC Edmonton — before hitting the road once again.

Any fan interested in attending the game can find tickets and information online at Pacific FC’s website.
