Bihar: Violence in Jehanabad after youth dies by suicide in police custody
Villagers were protesting death of Govind Majhi (25) who died inside Daudnagar sub-jail (interim jail for quarantine) the previous night.
PATNA: Violence erupted in Jehanabad after a youth detained by police for interrogation in a bike theft case, allegedly committed suicide by hanging himself using a cellphone charger wire inside a toilet of Ghosi police station premises on Thursday morning.
This is the second such violence in Jehanabad within two weeks. On July 24, a female havildar Kanti Devi (54) was crushed to death, at least 15 more police personnel including a trainee DSP were injured on NH-110 near Nehalpur Bazaar under Paras Bigha police station area in a violent clash between villagers and police.

Villagers were protesting death of Govind Majhi (25) who died inside Daudnagar sub-jail (interim jail for quarantine) the previous night. He was arrested on charges of liquor smuggling on July 19. He was native of Sarta village near Nehalpur Bazar.
In the Ghosi case, deceased youth was Grijesh Yadav (24), a native of Lakhawar village under Ghosi police station area. Grijesh’s family has alleged that he was tortured in police custody.
The irate villagers and family surrounded Ghosi police station, took away the body with themselves and started protesting after which violence erupted and a police-public clash took place.
A few constables were injured from the heavy stone pelting done by irate villagers during the clash.
Sources said criminal elements opened fire at least two rounds on police but none were injured. They said police had to also open fire at least two in air to retaliate and disperse the crowd.

However, Jehanabad SP Dipak Ranjan officially denied any firing by police. “Yes, I have come to know about two rounds fired on police by criminal elements in the crowd,” he said.
Ranjan, speaking to TOI over phone from spot said police have CCTV camera footages of the station where Grijesh would be seen going inside toilet with charger wire using which he committed suicide after tying it to an iron grill.
He said that in the footage, it is visible that he tried to harm himself with the wire inside a room earlier but could not succeed.
“Police broke toilet door to take him out but by then he had died. All these things unfolded at around 10.30am,” he said.
SP said there was no injury mark on Grijesh’s body. “Only ligature mark was seen in neck. He was brought to station for quizzing in a bike theft case on Wednesday night,” he said.
The SP also said Grijesh had been to jail a couple of times earlier in criminal cases including bike theft and due to such antecedents, he was brought for quizzing after a recent incident took place.
Ranjan said an officer on duty at the station and a chowkidar, who should have kept eye on the youth, have been suspended for dereliction of duty.
“Villagers had tried to damage the station but they could not. Police controlled the situation prior,” he said.
