At a time when the Karnataka Government has decided to allow offline classes for Grade nine onwards, data says that admissions continue to be dismal with Bengaluru recording lowest number of enrolments in the state. This is in sharp contrast to the rest of the state, however. Sirsi in Uttara Kannada, Chitradurga and Karwar in Uttara Kannada have the highest records at 98 per cent enrollment. However, Bengaluru North has a mere 74 per cent while Bengaluru South is the lowest with 73 per cent admissions.

Government schools record highest admissions
Admissions in government schools seem to have picked up. Across the state, admissions in these schools have been above 90 per cent. According to the latest data, government schools have seen 94 per cent admissions in Bengaluru North and 91 per cent in the south. Private aided schools have recorded 94 per cent admissions in the north and 96 per cent in the south, while private unaided schools recorded 71 per cent admissions in the north and 69 per cent in the south.

Parents undecided
While educationists have lauded the move of reopening schools for senior students, many parents are wary. Vanita Reddy, a parent of a 10th grade student, said: “The online classes can only supplement offline classes and cannot be a substitute.”

The government wants to extend night curfew anticipating an increase in cases yet wants to reopen schools

– Rajeshwari Gowda, a parent

“We still need clarity from the government on Covid. The government wants to extend night curfew anticipating an increase in cases yet wants to reopen schools,” said Rajeshwari Gowda, a parent. Dinesh Kumar, another parent said that news of the third wave can hit anytime. “So, it is better to wait for some more time before rushing to reopen schools. Anyway, parents should always have an option whether to continue with offline or online classes and I prefer online classes for my kids.”
