BANKURA: A 42-year-old man was killed by an elephant that strayed into Tentuldanga village along Bankura-West Midnapore border on Monday evening.
Mangal
Hembram had left home to run errands when he came face to face with the elephant, which had possibly been isolated from its herd. The animal attacked him and left him fatally wounded. Hembram was declared dead at Bishnupur hospital.
“Elephant attacks are not new here, but have increased in recent times,” said
Bablu Karmakar, a local. Residents said elephants often entered
Beliatore, Sonamukhi,
Barjora and Bankadaha in search of food. A person was killed in Sonamukhi last Friday.
District magistrate Radhika Aiyer said: “We are aware of the problem and are working in association with forest officials to reduce man-animal conflicts.”
