RAICHUR: To prevent flooding in his low-lying house at Vasavi Nagar in Raichur city during monsoon, a 72-year-old retired bank manager has literally raised it by 4 feet from the ground using hydraulic technology.
Every rainy season, Satyanarayan Mujumdar used to employ men to put mud inside the compound wall to raise the ground above the road, from where water used to enter his house.
But he realised this would not work for long, as the the ground was sinking — it had come down by 1.5 feet from the road — prompting him to find a solution.
When he was toying with the idea of building a new hosue, he recalled an instance in Sindhanur, where a house was lifted by about 3 feet. Mujumdar told TOI: “I immediately contacted my friend Suranarayana Rao to check on that house. After speaking to its owner, he gave me the contact of JJ Building Lifting and Shifting Services.”
Sai Srinivas of JJ company inspected his house, built 30 years ago, and said they would safely lift the structure.
The company sent 15 men on July 18 for the purpose. They used 150 hydraulic jacks to lift the house, which was sturdy.
The labourers dug 3 feet from the surface around the house — while maintaining the same gap to place bricks to lay the foundation and build the foundation wall. After laying the foundation, hydraulic jacks were used to lift the house. In 20 days, the house rose above the road, solving the flood issue once and for all.
Mumjumdar said he has spent Rs 8 lakh for the work. “To build a new house here, it would have cost me Rs 30-40 lakh, and another Rs 10,000 as monthly rent for staying elsewhere till the completion of the house. To avoid all these expenses, I decided to lift the house,” he said.
