2 held for vandalising mazar in Mehrauli
New Delhi: A mazar (mausoleum) built on a platform around a tree near CDR Chowk in south Delhi’s Mehrauli was vandalised by two men early on Tuesday. Police said an emergency response vehicle (ERV) reached the location and arrested the accused. This is the second time an attempt has been made to vandalise the structure.
DCP (South) Atul Thakur said, “A call was received at 5.40am regarding some people trying to break the mazar.
Cops in an ERV arrested two men, Ranjeet and Kanishk, trying to break the structure’s walls. A case was lodged and the duo was sent to judicial custody.”
Later, the mazar was covered with tarps and surrounded by temporary roadblocks. Locals said they were not aware when the incident occurred. Some said there was a dispute as a few people believed it was obstructing traffic movement. Many said it did not bother them.
In July, a woman, Geeta, had uploaded a video while trying to damage the mazar. Subsequently, a case was registered and the woman was arrested. Geeta in her video alleged that it was obstructing traffic.
Thakur said the arrested duo claimed they were influenced by the woman’s video. “After they saw the video on social media, they reached there to damage it. While one of them is in a college in Uttar Pradesh, the other is unemployed,” he added.
