MYSURU: While Dakshina Kannada has been struggling to rein in a spike in Covid-19 cases, ostensibly fuelled by interstate travellers, Chamarajanagar district, which also shares borders with Kerala besides Tamil Nadu, has brought down daily fresh cases to single digits since August 16.
The number of active cases has also fallen below the 100-mark.
On Sunday Chamarajanagar reported eight cases, while on Saturday, it had only five new cases.
Of these, four were reported from Chamarajanagar taluk and the other from Gundlupet.
On Friday (August 20), the district has just one case, six cases on August 19, seven cases each on August 18 and 17 and 10 cases each on August 16 and 15. According to district War Room data, active cases on Saturday stood at 90, of which only four are in ICU. This means the number of serious cases has also drastically come down.
Authorities say the drop in number of cases, especially in rural areas, is a big relief. “There is high movement of people in border areas, so the falling numbers is a positive sign. The decision to strictly follow Covid-19 guidelines is yielding results,” officials said.
Dr MC Ravi, district health officer, said: “We are carrying out extensive vaccination drives in border areas. We have made negative certificates mandatory to cross the border from other states. Demand for transit passes is high in border areas. We are optimistic that the number will fall further. People should continue to cooperate with us in this fight.”
