MUMBAI: In what could be the costliest catch on the Mumbai-Palghar coast, a fisherman who set sail after the month-long monsoon fishing ban returned home a crorepati. Chandrakant Tare netted 157 Ghol fish, touted to be the most expensive edible and commercial fish in the region.
The ‘fish with a heart of gold’ is prized in east Asia for the medicinal properties of its internal organs.
Its skin is a great source of highquality collagen, used in making functional food and cosmetic products. Tare had set sail with a 10-member crew. After the boat reached Wadhwan, around 25 nautical miles off Palghar, they laid the net in deep sea. To their surprise, a school of fish, big and small, was trapped. Soon, a video of the prized catch started circulating across fishing villages. So, within hours of their arrival at Murbhe on August 28, traders had lined up for the auction. By the time the auction ended, the bladder and other internal organs of the finest croaker fish had fetched Tare Rs 1.33 crore.

Treading cautiously, Tare said the catch would help him tide over his financial woes.
