15 districts in Tamil Nadu report marginal increase in fresh Covid infections

Fresh cases of Covid-19 went up marginally to 1,568 on Friday compared to 1,562 on Thursday and 1,509 on Wednesday. Fifteen districts including Coimbatore, Namakkal, Cuddalore and Villupuram reported an increase in new cases in the past 24 hours.

CHENNAI: Fresh cases of Covid-19 went up marginally to 1,568 on Friday compared to 1,562 on Thursday and 1,509 on Wednesday. Fifteen districts including Coimbatore, Namakkal, Cuddalore and Villupuram reported an increase in new cases in the past 24 hours.
Coimbatore, which reported the most new cases and sharpest increase in the past 24 hours, was also the only district to report more than 200 new cases.
The western district reported 239 cases on Friday compared to 215 cases it reported on Thursday. During the same period new cases rose to 62 from 47 in Namakkal and to 55 from 43 in Cuddalore. Chennai logged the highest number of new cases after Coimbatore, though cases in the district dipped to 162 from 166 on Thursday. Erode (125) and Thanjavur (108) were two other districts to report more than 100 cases. Tirupur had 98 new cases, an increase from 90 cases on Thursday.
However, 22 districts in the state reported fewer than 25 cases each and among these – Dindigul (9), Theni (9), Tirupathur (7), Perambalur (6), Tenkasi (4), Ramanathapuram (3) and Virudhunagar (3) reported cases in single digits.
Meanwhile, 19 deaths recorded on Friday took the death toll to 34,980 and the state reported a cumulative case tally of 26.19 lakh. At the end of the day, after discharging 1,657 patients, there were 16,370 people still undergoing treatment for the viral infection. Of the 19 deaths, four were reported in Tiruvallur, three in Coimbatore, two in Tiruvannamalai, one each in 10 districts. The state vaccinated 5.5 lakh people on Friday, taking the dosage tally in the state centres to 3.2 crore. Meanwhile, 21.71 lakh people were vaccinated in privte hospitals since May 1.
