Drains in Najafgarh and Shahdara in Delhi to be Cleaned and Beautified

Irrigation and Flood Control Minister Satyendar Jain stated that the Najafgarh and Shahdara connecting drains that flow into the Yamuna will be cleaned and beautified.

The drains will be turned into clean water channels, including the supplementary drain that reaches the river. His department has put out a plan for drain rejuvenation, which Jain examined on Friday.

The drains are currently filled with solid trash in addition to conveying wastewater. The department has been tasked with finding answers to the problems that are causing the water quality in the drains to deteriorate.  The drains are to be turned into clean water channels, including the supplementary drain that reaches the river. Cleaning the drains may allow groundwater recharge in the surrounding areas.

The minister said that cleaning the river is the primary target of the Delhi government and multiplicity of agencies should not slow down the progress of work.

These massive drains that pour into the Yamuna contaminate the river with waste. Gurgaon’s water also enters the Najafgarh drain. The Shahdara link drain, which runs for 4 kilometres and discharges into the Yamuna, transports water from East Delhi.
