Tech-savvy youth nabbed for duping vendors
The man had devised a trick to cheat people using an online wallet
A 20-year-old engineering student was arrested for allegedly duping many vendors of lakhs of rupees using his technical expertise.

Son of an auto-driver, Arun (not his real name) used to hoodwink shopkeepers and merchants by a trick he devised on his online wallet. According to the West Division Cybercrime Economic Narcotics (CEN) police, “Arun manipulated his online wallet to cheat the vendors. He started by making smaller purchases and instead of scanning the QR code with his phone, he would ask the vendor for their mobile number. He did not pay the vendors, but the latter’s phone app would show that the amount was received.”

This way, Arun, the resident of Kanakapura, cheated several vendors over the past four to five months. Sometimes he was caught red-handed. At those times, he would pretend that some mistake had happened and he would offer cash and settle the matter.

Recently, a jeweller from the City Market area filed a complaint with the police, stating that a man had cheated them of Rs 1.6 lakh. The complainant stated that a youth (Arun) walked into the store and purchased silver items weighing 1.5 kg. There were two bills; one of Rs 50,000 and one of Rs 56,000. He used his modus operandi and made away with the silverware without paying the money.

In a similar manner, Arun had purchased a camera worth Rs 42,000 from a store in Gandhinagar. There too, he managed to hoodwink the store manager.

After auditing the stocks, the gadget store manager approached the police and filed a complaint. The police enquired and found that Arun’s mobile number was linked to all these cases.

The police reached Arun’s house in Kanakapura and discovered that he was staying with his parents and a sister. Arun’s parents said that they were unaware of their son’s wrongdoings. Arun had told them that he had purchased the items for their soon-to-be-held housewarming ceremony.

The cops have booked Arun under appropriate sections of the IT Act and for cheating and further investigations are underway.
