Heavy rains lash coastal Odisha; Puri, Bhubaneswar break decades-old record

As heavy rains lashed coastal Odisha, capital Bhubaneswar and temple town Puri have recorded their wettest September day ever. A red alert was issued by the IMD for Puri, Jagatsinghpur, Kendrapara, Nayagarh, Khorda, Dhenkanal districts.

Puri recorded 341 mm rainfall in the last 24 hours, bettering an 87-year-old record. The town recorded 210.8 mm rainfall on September 20, 1934. Bhubaneswar, meanwhile, recorded 193 mm rainfall during the last 24 hours, breaking a six-decade record. The city received 163 mm rainfall on September 5, 1958, 63 years ago.

Meanwhile, three deaths have been reported. Two persons died due to a wall collapse in Kendrapara district and a farmer was swept away by an overflowing drain in Khordha district.

“57 places in the state have recorded extremely heavy rainfall in the last 24 hours making it the wettest day in Odisha in 5 years. The situation is likely to normalise by Monday evening,” said Umashankar Das, scientist, IMD Bhubaneswar.

According to the bulletin released by the state meteorological department, the deep depression over the north coastal Odisha is moving west-northwestwards with a speed of 12 kmph. “It is likely to continue to move west-northwest wards across North Odisha, north Chhattisgarh and Madhya Pradesh during the next 48 hours. It is very likely to weaken into a depression during the next 24 hours,” the bulletin read.

The regional Met office has forecast heavy to very heavy rainfall at a few places and extremely heavy rains at one or two places in Sambalpur, Deogarh, Angul, Sonepur, and Bargarh districts, heavy to very heavy rainfall at isolated places in Cuttack and six other districts, and heavy rainfall at one or two places in Khurda and 10 other districts on Monday.
