Tripura rally denied nod, Abhishek says BJP scared
Kolkata/Agartala: Trinamool Congress national general secretary Abhishek Banerjee on Monday said the BJP and the Biplab Deb government in Tripura were “scared to death” and were using all their “might and resources” to stop him from “entering” Tripura.
Banerjee’s response came after the Agartala administration rejected, twice in quick succession, the party’s public rally plans on September 15 and 16, even on suggested alternative routes.
The Trinamool MP said the BJP could keep trying, but would not be able to stop him.
Letters from Sadar SDPO Anirban Das to TMC leader and former MLA Subal Bhowmik cited two reasons for rejecting the public rallies in Agartala. “It was found that permission for organising a mass rally throughout the city of Agartala has already been granted to another political party on the relevant date and time. On further review, it was also found that the political party will organise the mass rally on the same route as prayed from your end. As such, from the perspective of security and law and order, the protest rally (of Trinamool) on September 15 from 14:00 hrs is not permitted,” the letter read.
West Tripura SP Manik Lal Das said the BJP Mahila Morcha had sought permission from police much earlier for a rally in Agartala on Wednesday. However, Trinamool feels the BJP is scared. TMC leader Sushmita Dev said: “Police say another political party has taken permission to rally at the same time and across the city of Agartala. (Chief minister) Biplab Deb is clearly quaking.”
Bhowmik shot off another letter, seeking permission for alternative routes on September 15 or 16. Trinamool general secretary Kunal Ghosh too tweeted that a “mega rally” would be held on September 16 for which the party had sought permission from the Tripura police in writing.
However, SDPO Das wrote back that the alternative route plan could not be allowed because “another large-scale political gathering is already scheduled on the same day in Agartala”. For rejecting the September 16 rally, Das reasoned in his letter to Bhowmik that “there will be law and order commitment of police in view of Visvakarma Puja, which falls on September 17”. The SDPO said traffic and law and order commitments during the pre-Puja period would not allow mobilising manpower for the rally.
“To prevent Abhishek Banerjee’s rally in Agartala, the BJP conspired in numerous ways. Such conspiracies will not stop Abhishek Banerjee and the Trinamool in Tripura. They are afraid of Abhishek Banerjee’s political strength,” Kunal Ghosh said.
